Born in Agrinio, where he spent his childhood and teenage years; his family comes from the mountain village Agios Vlassis. He graduated from high school in Agrinio in 1949 and left for Athens, where in 1951 he was admitted to the School of Fine Arts. After his studies in Athens and his military service, he left on scholarship for Paris, where he studied for three more years at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts. He stayed on for a number of years in Paris, where he held exhibitions and made a name for himself as a sculptor; when the Junta came into power in Greece, he left for San Francisco, where he taught at California State University. After many years in France and the USA, he returned to Greece after the restoration of democracy and from 1980-1998 was professor of sculpture at the School of Architecture, NTUA, where he became professor emeritus in 2007. On 22 May 2013, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Western Greece in Agrinio. He died on 7 June 2018.
