Georgios Hatzopoulos, painter, and conservator at the National Gallery, studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Nikolaos Ghyzis. He worked chiefly in landscape and seascape painting, following Impressionist trends, and was one of the first Greek artists to abandon the studio to paint in the open air. A master of colour technique, he produced a series of landscapes involving a realistic approach to colour and a technique which is interesting for the alternation of light and shadow.

Description
In Boat with Draught Animals, a barge loaded with animals sails in a waveless sea on whose surface the shadow of the vessel appears; the shore can be seen in the background. The diffuse, gentle lighting links sky and sea, the warm colouring, without points of particular heightening, lend a lyrical tone to the composition, while at the same time defining the moment in time - dawn or twilight.
