Ferekeidis Nikolaos
(Naples 1863 - Athens 1929)
A pupil of Nikolaos Ghyzis in Munich, Ferekeidis, from his first steps in his artistic creation, concerned himself almost exclusively with a sui generis outdoor painting, of an impressionistic or expressionistic character, as well as with scenes from everyday life in natural surroundings, as he assimilated avant-garde views which had at that time made their appearance in Munich.

Description
The work Castle, which is presumed to be a depiction of the castle of Corfu, is a typical work by Ferekeidis, painted in accordance with the way he was developing in landscape. Features from the spirit of painting of the School of Naples, where Ferekeidis was born and brought up, are still apparent. The landscape, with the strollers walking about in the castle, brings Ferekeidis close to the open-air painting of the first 30 years of the twentieth century. The influence of German Expressionism in the thick, nervous brush-stroke and the exuberant colour is obvious.
