Gate of Hadrian

Like his father, Vikentios, Stephanos Lantsas was concerned with the depiction of archaeological sites and monuments, within the framework of a form of archaeological landscape painting which developed in the early years after the Revolution and throughout the nineteenth century. The rendering of the subject is based on a, somewhat frigid, realistic approach but the water-colour technique which the artist uses makes the composition light and cool. The importance of his painting is similar to that of the travellers' descriptions and engravings, as it preserves depictions executed before restoration work and further damage.
