Dekoulakos Ilias
(1929-1998)
Ilias Dekoulakos expressed through his painting his thinking on social problems, which sprang from his political commitment. In the early 1960s, he set out from a non-representational expressionism, and, after intense exploration of representational painting, arrived, in the years of the military dictatorship, at the application of a kind of photographic realism, as a critical commentary on social reality. Later, after 1985, he turned towards landscape, which he rendered with gestural intensity, not as a mere record of a place, but mainly as a critique of and sensitivity towards the despoliation which nature has undergone.
