Makroulakis studied painting at the Athenian Technological Institute and for a period worked as a stage set designer. In 1971, he visited Teheran to paint the portrait of the Empress Farah, but stayed there for eight years, with the result that his style was influenced by Persian art, as is apparent particularly from his concern with the miniature and the detailed small-scale elaboration of his subjects. His painting is a realistic, almost photographic, faultlessly rendered depiction of reality. The foremost place among his subjects is held by the still life and landscape, without, of course, any rejection of the portrayal of the human body, particularly the male.

Description
Makroulakis's works show purity and precision in the colours, as well as a peerless manner of using the tones and masses of the composition, which is precisely the case with Vase of Roses, which is a superb example of his work. In giving primary importance to the lighting and particular weight to the role of shadow, the artist succeeds in re-creating the vase of roses with such remarkable skill that he elevates the subject to the status of the immaculate archetype, deliberately seeking to keep a distance from facile personal emotional interpretations.
